On the issue of legalizing same-sex marriage, even Christians who agree that it is wrong differ about whether Christians should make it a political issue. Whether legalizing same-sex marriage is an important political issue to you or not, the beliefs that are used to argue for it should matter deeply to you. No matter what our society decides on this and other issues, when an unbiblical belief works ...

Research in England revealed that bosses who treat their employees unfairly can cut their lives short. Sixty-four hundred civil servants in London were studied and asked questions like: "Do you ever get criticized unfairly?" "Do you ever get praised for your work?"
Ten years later, it was discovered that men who reported low scores on their bosses' fairness were 30 percent more likely to have coronary ...

Randy Cohen, who writes "The Ethicist" column for The New York Times Magazine, says:
In New York at 33rd and Broadway, it's a big transportation hub. Penn Station's right there. A lot of commuter trains stop there, a major subway stop. Thousands and thousands of people pouring out
and what everybody wants more than anything else is: They want a taxi.
And the most appalling episodes of violence ...

An acquaintance called with what he said was an embarrassing request: His little girl had been caught shoplifting from our church bookstore, and he wanted to know if I would represent the church so she could come and apologize. He said he wanted to use this incident as a teaching moment. I agreed—but I had a much bigger lesson in mind.
The next day, the parents and their eight-year-old daughter trooped ...

Jussi Salonoja was speeding. On February 11, 2004, Helsinki police stopped the 27-year-old Finnish sausage maker driving 80 kilometers an hour in a 40 kph zone.
Salonoja is no stranger to illegal speeds. Back in 2000, he was caught cruising the highway at 200 kilometers per hour, for which he paid a hefty fine. This time the fine was higher.
Finland's lawmakers have little tolerance for speeding and ...

In the 2001 Tour de France, Lance Armstrong was hotly pursued by the 1997 German winner, Jan Ullrich. In the 13th stage of the race, Ullrich had a bad crash, running off the road and vaulting over his handlebars. Armstrong stopped, halting the race while Ullrich got up and recovered. In that race, Armstrong ultimately was victorious, and Ullrich took the runner-up trophy.
Two years later in the 2003 ...

At the beginning of the 21st century, reasoned discourse [is imperiled]. Reasoned discourse is increasingly giving way to in-your-face sound bites….Hardball is the dominant metaphor for American public life. Our interchanges are confrontational, divisive, and dismissive. Truth is not something we expect to emerge from a conversation. It is something we hope to impose. Balance and fairness are ...

.
Augustine's reputation for fairness brought many litigants—pagans, heretics, and Christians. On occasion he would skip all his meals in order to settle the cases before ...

The parable of the vineyard workers (Matthew 20) offends our sense of fairness. Why should everyone get equal pay for unequal work?
Back in Ontario when the apples ripened, Mom would sit all seven of us down, Dad included, with pans and paring knives until the mountain of fruit was reduced to neat rows of filled canning jars. She never bothered keeping track of how many we did, though the younger ones ...
